History

Thornmarch was founded by a lesser member of House Tyrell after their raising to
Lord Paramount of the Mander by Aegon the Conquerer. With so many knights and lordlings dead in the Field of Fire, many lands suddenly lay in question, and to prove their allegiance Tyrell married off a lesser daughter to Ser Alistan, also known as the Knight of Thorns, who had fought alongside the Targaryen host rather than the Gardeners who ruled the Reach at the time. Taking the name Thornmarch, after the lands which he was given claim to, Alistan quickly set about securing his power. He was a cruel lord, brutally suppressing his subjects, and whispers say he went raping and pillaging nearby lands to feed his greed.

In spite of his father's poor character, Alistan's heir Alister was of far more noble character. When his father was murdered while on a trip to investigate rumors of unrest, he forgave the smallfolk and merely asked for the body to be returned so it could be buried properly. He undid much of the excesses of his father, trying to be true to the ideal of chivalry that his mother had handed down to him.

The Thornmarch house has, since Alister, strove to be good lords to their folk. Though always seeking to improve their own standing within the Seven Kingdoms, and despite a vicious streak they are generally respected by their subjects. However when Robert's Rebellion broke out, Anias Thornmarch, young lord of the house, saw a chance to greatly expand the fortunes of his house. When a neighboring household refused to raise their men in defense of their king, citing the Madness of King Aerys, Thornmarch went forth. The house was not only defeated, but utterly purged, in what Anias claims is noble battle, but whispers speak of an entire family rounded up and burned alive.

After the Rebellion drew to a close and the Tyrells surrendered to their new King, Thornmarch was officially given leave to keep the land they had taken, in the name of peace and for lack of those with better claim. The following years saw them bringing their new lands under control, which was difficult due to a great many bandits that saw the House's military stretched thin and began preying on their newly conquered lands.

With his daughter Ellia coming of age, Anias sought matches that would increase his house's prestige. He entered into negotiations with Tiber Vitarrion, culminating in Marcus Vitarrion coming to Thornmarch to meet his prospective bride and be evaluated by Anias. This meeting ended in disaster, as the two young adults fell for one another, but were caught kissing alone in the Thornmarch apple orchards, in a state of less than acceptable undress.

Anias flew into a rage, locking Marcus up and insisting he had, or would have, defiled Ellia. However when Marcus was broken free and efforts to recapture the young Vitarrion failed, he realized that war was on the horizon. Only the intervention of Jon Arryn stopped the conflict before it could begin, with Anias admitting wrong-doing.

Now Anias looks for other suitors, else a way to reconcile with the Vitarrions, while his uncle Alcian pushes him to marry Ellia to his grandson Alister.

Geography and Holdings

The lands of Thornmarch, from which the house takes its name, is a fertile stretch of land at the edge of the border between the Reach and the Dornish Marches. It is particularly known for an abundance of rosebushes, and is well populated with abundant farm-holds and villages where produce is stored and processed for bread, wine, and other such things.

Thornhold, a modest stone tower built originally as a watchtower, is the only real defensive structure in the land, with a sprawling town built around it. However the house military is almost entirely made up of cavalry, which goes to and fro on an ever-vigilant search for bandits.
