Motto: Iron Blooded

Coat of Arms: two grey vertical lines on a red background
Realm: The Stormlands
Liege: House Vitarrion

History

The first lord of House Arraren was the knight Haelyn who lead the final charge into the castle to conquer it many eons ago. Upon swearing fealty as the new lord of the first banner house of Vitarrion he swore that in honor of this victory he would never rebuild the majority of the ruined castle. A vow that has been upheld to the present day, with only the two main towers rebuilt solidly.

Being to the north of Castle Bloodstone means that very few invaders make it to the Twin Castle, this relative peace has allowed the various lords of Red Valley to invest their time in expanding the house's mining operations in the area. Over the years ambition has expanded them to the point where there are barely enough workers to fill the mines, with more than one sitting unworked until an older mine should close.

While the lords of Arraren have a lighter hand of the law than other lords might, they do not tolerate stealing or interfering with the mines. The very worst criminals risk being worked to death in the deepest mines.

Greyjoy's rebellion:
When Lord Juro heard that his lord Vitarrion would be leaving to go provide aid to Stannis in suppressing the Greyjoy rebellion, he immediately formed an honor guard to head and keep his lord safe. While he did not have any notable kills like his lord, the guard he led did succeed in preventing even a scratch from landing on Vitarrion (splinters from the boat don't count).

Geography and Holdings

House Arraren rules the Red Valley and the surrounding mountains, from which it mines the iron and marble that gives them their prestige. Their seat sits in the greatest pass into the valley, on which the two towers that make up their house crest sit. These towers are all that remain of a mighty castle, torn down by Vitarrion forces to crush a forgotten rival and conquer the valley.

Many mines dot the mountains and hills within the valley, more indeed than House Arraren can efficiently work. At any given time they simply extract the easiest ore, knowing that their options are many. Homes dot the valley, and collections of ruined construction grace every mine entrance. Those that do not farm, mine, and those that mine must move frequently. Homes spring up overnight to house the miners, and are abandoned when the call to move is issued.

Unlike the Vitarrions, Arraren rules with a far lighter hand. While those who cheat or threaten the mines that are Arraren's lifeblood are dealt with harshly, peasants are largely left to themselves except when the lords are petitioned.

Defense:
A pair of towers among the ruined walls of a far larger structure dominate the main pass into the Red Valley that House Arraren lays ancient claim to since being gifted it by their liege lords. Once a mighty castle, the structure was torn down by Vitarrion forces long ago when they first conquered the Red Valley. Ancient Tradition has stopped any Arraren since from trying to replace it, and so they have long ruled from these remnants.

Law:
Mining is dangerous work, and the House of Arraren's freedom from peasant revolt has largely been thanks to acknowledging that fact and having a far lighter hand with the law than their lieges. However banditry and those trying to steal the riches of the mine are dealt with harshly.

Population:
House Arraren's lands are sparsely populated, with the most dense collection of people living near the mines at the foot of the mountains. Otherwise single families live all throughout the Red Valley.

Power:
Trained Personal Guard
Green Infantry x 3
Trained Archers

Wealth: 31 [19 base +12 glory] (Mine x 3)
House Arraren thanks nearly all of its wealth and influence for the rich veins of iron and quarries of marble it has spent centuries tapping into. It is said much of the stone that makes up the red keep was extracted from the lands of House Arraren.
